Clay
In Shield TBM tunneling, bentonite is commonly used as the primary material for slurry preparation. Due to its inherent properties, bentonite can adjust slurry viscosity and density on its own. However, depending on site conditions, additional adjustment of slurry density may be required. In such cases, bentonite is often mixed with clay, or clay may be used together with thickening additives to achieve the desired slurry properties. Clay is a natural mineral formed through the weathering process of rocks and is environmentally friendly. Clay particles, mainly composed of feldspar-related minerals, contain nano-scale pores and exhibit excellent physical adsorption capacity and chemical cation exchange properties, making them highly effective for slurry conditioning and stabilization.
